What Does It Mean?
Tingling or numbness, whether in one area of the body or throughout the entire body, is a signal that something is not right. What could be the reason for this feeling?
- A deficiency of certain vitamins: The body requires a certain amount of vitamins in order for the nerves to function properly. Some of the more important vitamins are B1,B6, B12, E, and niacin. If any of these is lacking, it can result in a tingling sensation.
- Systematic diseases: These types of diseases affect a number of tissues or organs or the body as a whole. Examples of some of these are chronic fatigue, diabetes, liver disease, vascular damage, connective tissue disorder, blood diseases, kidney disease, and chronic inflammation.
- Nerve entrapment syndromes: This happens when nerves become compressed, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome, the end result can be a tingling or numb feeling. Other types of these are nerve palsy, radial nerve palsy, and peroneal nerve palsy.
- Diabetes: Patients with diabetic neuropathy make up 30% of those claiming to have peripheral neuropathy (damage to peripheral nerves). Often, this is the first symptoms of diabetes. Tingling or similar feelings usually begin at the feet and move up the legs, sometimes being felt in the hands and then the arms.
