Stretching Your way to a Healthy Sciatic Nerve

backpainThe Source of your Lower Back Pain

If there is one common thing about every Sciatica sufferer in the world, it is that they don't want to suffer anymore. They want relief, and they want it as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, that means many people who suffer from this debilitating injury will seek that healing through medication. But taking medicine is one of the worst things a person can do to overcome this disabling injury. That's because medicine only covers the symptoms, rather than healing the underlying injury.

Even though, we are conditioned just to continue to take medication that covers symptoms, it's important to seek out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. They will examine your upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments that may be the underlying cause of that lower back pain.

If they determine those two vertebrae in your upper neck are out of alignment, they will make the necessary adjustments in order to realign your upper cervical spine. They will then partner with you by setting up a schedule to keep you on a path toward healing, as well as give you exercises you can do at home.

Below are some exercises they may suggest. But it's important to check with your upper cervical specialist, and only do those exercises he or she recommends.

Sciatica Stretches

  • Lie on the floor, pull both knees toward your chest, so the injured leg is crossed over your other leg. Place both of your hands behind the knee of the uninjured leg, and pull both legs toward you until the stretch is felt.
  • Lie on your back, pull the knee of your injured leg toward your chest with the corresponding hand, and gently pull your ankle toward the opposite thigh with your opposite hand. Hold it for 30 seconds, and then slowly bring it back to a resting position.
  • Lie on your back, cross the injured leg over your other leg, so the sole of the foot of the injured leg is flat on the ground. Pull the knee of the injured leg, which should be bent over the other leg, straight toward you with your hands.

The Benefits of Stretching

You will want to hold each stretch for 30 seconds before returning your leg to a resting position. It's also important to do this three sets of these, once a day. These exercises will loosen the muscles surrounding your Sciatic Nerve, thus lessening the pain caused by your Sciatica, lubricate your joint, allow nutrients and oxygen to flow to your muscles, and increase your range of motion.

While each of these exercises and more will help with that Sciatica, it is important to partner with your upper cervical chiropractor in the healing process. They are there to help you live a happier and healthier life.
