On Your Sciatica's Nerve
When it comes to things getting on a person's nerves, there is a lot that can cause pressure against the Sciatic Nerve. That's because it's the largest nerve in the human body. It extends from the lower back, through the buttock, down each leg, and branches in two at the knee.
When it comes to the type of pain a person feels, it's pretty noticeable. There are many conditions that can cause back pain, as there are many possible signs of Fibromyalgia, but Sciatica is always felt along the sciatic nerve. That pain, which may extend down to the foot, may also include a “pins and needles” feeling, numbness, or muscular weakness. It may also feel like an electric shock that ranges from moderate to severe. It is more common to feel this pain, which often includes lower back pain, when sitting, coughing, or sneezing.
The Causes of Sciatica
There are a several conditions that can cause pressure against your Sciatic Nerve including:
- Herniated Disc
- Bone Spurs
- Piriformis Syndrome
- Lumbar spinal canal stenosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Bulging discs
- Tumors (on the nerve roots of the Sciatic Nerve or spinal cord)
- Spinal injuries
- Neck injuries
- Pressure from poor posture
Sustaining an Injury to Your Sciatic Nerve
When you sustain an injury that causes your muscles and tissue to shift throughout your body, it places pressure on certain parts of your body. If an injury causes pressure against your sciatic nerve, that's Sciatica. The list above are not the only conditions that can cause pressure to this nerve, so it's important to make sure everything in your body is where it's supposed to be.
Though, while there is only so much an individual can do to ensure they maintain a healthy body, there is something an upper cervical chiropractor can do. They can examine a person's upper cervical spine for any misalignments that may be the underlying cause of their Sciatica.
When the top two vertebrae in the spine are out of alignment by only ¼ of a millimeter, this places enough pressure on the brainstem to hinder the brain's ability to communicate with the body. That miscommunication could lead to various health problems, but it is possible for those conditions to be reversed by realigning those top two vertebrae in the neck.
