Life After your Acid Reflux Diagnosis

heartburn, acid reflux. gerd, digestive disorder

Understanding Acid Reflux

If your doctor diagnosed you with Acid Reflux Disease, also known as heartburn, you can ask them to write a drug prescription for you or you can change your diet. Let's assume you take the more cost effective route—the one that won't lead to possible medical complications due to side effects from medication—and choose to change your diet. The best way to do this is to keep a food diary to help you determine which foods trigger this digestive disorder. The more detailed it is the easier it will be to pinpoint which foods or drinks trigger this digestive disorder. Then, you can change your diet accordingly.

Overcoming Acid Reflux

This digestive disorder is caused by stomach acids splashing out of the stomach and into the esophagus. It can also manifest itself as GERD, or Gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is a more serious chronic form of heartburn that can lead to complications like cancer. Both are marked by chronic coughing and pain and burning in the chest. Along with certain foods and medications, this can also be triggered by obesity or stress.

So, how do you prevent it? Well, this isn't so much about not eating certain foods as it is about limiting your portions. Remember, this is caused by stomach acid splashing up into your esophagus, which means the less of certain foods you eat the less chance you will have that stomach acids will splash up and out of your stomach.

  • High-fat foods – Fried foods tend to stay in the stomach longer
  • Acidic Foods – Such foods as tomatoes, citrus, salsa, and vinegar
  • Beverages – Certain beverages such as caffeinated coffee and tea, excess alcohol, sodas and other carbonated beverages
  • Chocolate – Since this contains caffeine, it is also a possible trigger of Acid Reflux
  • Spicy foods – Salsa, peppery foods, garlic, and onions

Acid Reflux and Upper Cervical

So, now that you're on the road to determining which foods and drinks you should avoid, you're probably wondering if there is anything else you can do to overcome this problem. Well, yes, there is. You can make an appointment with an upper cervical chiropractor. Neurological dysfunction has been shown to contribute to a susceptibility to acid reflux. Misalignments in the upper neck lead to neurological dysfunction and frequently issues with the digestive system including acid reflux. If you have a history of head or neck injuries is important that you have your upper neck thoroughly evaluated as a possible cause of this neurological dysfunction and acid reflux.
