Trigeminal neuralgia is a very painful condition having to do with the facial muscles and nerves. Everyday things that most of us take for granted can be extremely painful for someone with trigeminal neuralgia. If you have this condition, the following things can cause you pain:
People with trigeminal neuralgia often feel misunderstood because, unless you personally experience it, it is impossible to describe the degree of pain. It is often described as a silent condition. It can be very hard to enjoy life when you know the simplest of smiles can bring on major agony. As a result, many with trigeminal neuralgia wonder if anything can ease up the pain.
One study observed a 54-year-old man who had trigeminal neuralgia for 5 years. He sought the care of an upper cervical chiropractor, and his pain began to go away shortly after his first adjustment. A month later, he stated that he had no symptoms at all.
Another study observed a 10-year-old boy with trigeminal neuralgia. After just 7 months of care by an upper cervical chiropractor, his symptoms also disappeared. Following up on his situation 18 months later revealed he was still symptom-free.
One reason you may get trigeminal neuralgia is due to a misalignment in the bones of the upper cervical spine, especially the C1 and C2 vertebrae. If either of these bones has moved out of place, it can put the brainstem under stress, hindering signals going to the brain from the body. A decrease of blood and cerebrospinal fluid has also been noticed when a misalignment is in this area of the neck. The end result is irritation to the trigeminal nerve and, in turn, pain.
We focus on realigning the bones of the neck to restore communication and blood flow and reduce irritation. We do this by a gentle method encouraging the bones to move back into place on their own. This is what helped those in the above-mentioned studies, and it may be able to help you as well.
