A mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is often a result of a hard blow to the head. A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that about 30% of deaths related to injury in the United States are due to MTBIs.

In addition, 400 out of 100,000 teenagers suffer from a mild traumatic brain injury annually. Most injuries occur following sports accidents and other activities.

Myths About Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries

Here are some existing misconceptions about MTBIs:

  1. You must be bleeding, have broken legs, or be in comatose for your case to qualify as MTBI.
  2. You have to be knocked unconscious to get MTBI diagnosis.
  3. You must endure a skull fracture to have an MTBI.

All of these are false statements. Any physical injury that affects the head or neck such as whiplash, falling, or even simple tripping, can result in an MTBI.

Symptoms of Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries

Children who endured a mild traumatic brain injury can deal with some of these symptoms:

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Offers Solution

We know for a fact that misalignment of the first two bones in the neck (the atlas and axis) can cause MTBI. Even a misalignment as small as ¼ of a millimeter can already result in severe pain and symptoms we listed above.

Here at Body Balance Spinal Care, we employ upper cervical chiropractic to correct any misalignment of the atlas and axis. We do it without the cracking or popping of the neck. This safe method allows the bones to return to their alignment naturally. Once you receive this form of therapy, there is a high chance of reduction or complete resolution of your MTBI symptoms.Call us at (916) 973-0623 to set an appointment with Dr. Erwin.

concussions-athletes-are-at-a-higher-risk-for-problemsConcussions can be hard to deal with. For athletes, it is a condition they must constantly be aware of because they are at a much higher risk than non-athletes. For those of you who take part in football, soccer, hockey, and similar contact sports, you may have to deal with a concussion at some point. Much still needs to be learned about concussions. Research is consistently being done, but there remains some questions needing to be answered, including the following:

If have had an injury to your head, you may begin noticing a number of different symptoms that seem to negatively impact your cognitive function, physical health, or emotions. Usually, these symptoms only last a short time. If you notice them continuing, you may have what is called post-concussion syndrome (PCS). This syndrome is known for symptoms of a concussion that last long after they should have gone away. A common symptom you might notice is repetitive headaches. If you had headaches before your injury, these headaches will be much worse.

Getting Help for Concussions

You may wonder why one person’s concussion goes away rather quickly, while another person’s turns into post-concussion syndrome. The reason for this may have to do with whether or not you have a misalignment in the bones of the upper neck because of a blow to the head or neck. The C1 and C2 vertebrae can easily become misaligned. If this occurs, communication between the brain and body can become hindered. The flow of oxygen-rich blood and cerebrospinal fluid may also be compromised.

We use a gentle method to help encourage the bones in the neck to move back into their original position. We are not required to pop or crack the neck or spine to get positive results. Many people see amazing results in only a couple of visits to our office, and often concussion symptoms go away and do not return.

concussions-helped-by-upper-cervical-chiropractic-careRecently, the movie “Concussion” has made people more aware of this serious health condition. The movie alerts us to the reality of how concussions impact not only professional athletes, including football players, but the general public, too. In fact, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), as many as 4 million people suffer yearly from recreational and sporting activities having to do with concussions. Even more shocking is that since 2001, concussions in children have risen by 60 percent.

What are concussions? They are a quite complicated condition and the symptoms can differ from one person to another. How concussions impact you long-term has not yet been determined. However, what we do know is that once you have one concussion, you are at a higher risk to have another one.

Symptoms of Concussions

Concussions are known to have the following symptoms:

These usually go away with a few days or weeks following the trauma. However, some people may develop what is known as post-concussion syndrome. This can lead to further complications.

Seeking Care for Concussions

Going to your local primary care doctor can result in a prescription for medication to care for individual symptoms like headaches or feeling anxious. This may help on a short-term basis, but if the underlying cause is not addressed, the symptoms will return once the medication has worn off. It is possible that the injury you endured caused a misalignment in one of the top bones of the neck: the C1 or C2 vertebra.

This type of misalignment can put the brainstem under pressure. The surrounding nerves and tissues can become irritated, and healing may not occur as it should. Upper cervical chiropractors focus on making sure the bones of the upper spine are in proper alignment. If they are not, a gentle method is used that encourages these bones to move back into place without the need to pop or crack the back or neck. This often helps relieve the symptoms of concussions.
