So let’s pretend you have a chronic neck or back pain, Fibromyalgia or another condition that has a lot of inflammation and swelling that goes along with it. So your friendly MD puts you on Prednisone to help it...what's the big deal?
Well, basically what Prednisone does is decrease inflammation while depressing your immune system.
Common Side Effects according to www.drugs.com include difficulty sleeping; feeling of a whirling motion; increased appetite; increased sweating; indigestion; mood changes; nervousness.
This increased appetite, frequently leads to weight gain. People who have fibromyalgia or who are in chronic pain also commonly have depression symptoms. Weight gain can increase those depression symptoms.
There are other more severe side effects to prednisone include severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); appetite loss; black, tarry stools; changes in menstrual periods; convulsions; depression; diarrhea; dizziness; exaggerated sense of well-being; fever; general body discomfort; headache; increased pressure in the eye; joint or muscle pain; mood swings; muscle weakness; personality changes; prolonged sore throat, cold, or fever; puffing of the face; severe nausea or vomiting; swelling of feet or legs; unusual weight gain; vomiting material that looks like coffee grounds; weakness; weight loss.
Prolonged use of prednisone can cause adrenal glands to atrophy and stop producing cortisol.
That's not good! Patients are often told not to stop taking prednisone suddenly. The dose has to be tapered gradually to allow the adrenal glands, which have atrophied, time to recover. If not, the person could put themselves into an adrenal crisis (e.g., nausea, vomiting, shock).
So if you are put on any medication for any reason continue to seek the cause of the condition. Especially if it is a drug as dangerous as Prednisone.
Do not just continually rely on a medication to cover up the effects but seek the cause.
If you have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Pain, please continue to read about NUCCA and seek answers.
It's your body and your responsibility.

Are you regularly sleeping on your stomach?
Are you concerned with how your stomach sleeping may be affecting your neck?
I have found that stomach sleeping is one of the most harmful habits for the health and function of our spine and our nervous system. When the head is turned to the side and then the weight of the body is placed upon it...the muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, discs, nerves, etc. are compressed. The application of this stress of stomach sleeping will lead to an acceleration of degeneration of the discs and joints. Some of the worst degenerative disc disease that we have seen in the spine is in those that have spent their life sleeping on their belly.
So if you shouldn't sleep on your stomach...how should you sleep? Flat on your back is best. Some people will find that placing a pillow underneath the knees will be more comfortable. You should always sleep with only one pillow under your head though so the neck is in a relaxed position. If you are unable to sleep on your back then the next best option is on your side. When you are sleeping on your side, you want to make sure that your head and neck are in as an aligned position as possible. You should only use one pillow that is thick enough to support between your shoulder and your head. Most people have a pillow that is too thin to sleep on your side...so there head is side bent all night. The most vulnerable position for the neck to be in is side bent or extended.
To break the habit of stomach sleeping sometimes you have to get creative. Some people have even sowed a tennis ball that they had cut in half to a t-shirt and wear that when they slept! But most people don't have to go to that extreme...just understanding the importance of spinal alignment and knowing that stomach sleeping will destroy the spine is enough.
How long have you been stomach sleeping?
Have you ever had your neck thoroughly evaluated to see what your sleeping position has done to it?

Have you been experiencing strange symptoms in one of your eyes?
Seen flashing lights, suffered temporary blindness or seen patterns in your visual field?
Have you been to your medical doctor and received a diagnosis of retinal migraine?
Have you been told that medications are the only answer for your headaches?
The problem may actually be one of blood flow, and the solution may be traced to an accident or injury in your past. But what exactly is a retinal migraine? Here are five signs that you can use to tell if you have retinal migraine…
Researchers suspect decreased blood flow to the eye or optic nerve may be to blame for the unique symptoms of retinal migraine. This decreased blood flow can be a result of trauma to the upper neck. Accidents and injuries affecting the head and neck can lead to misalignments which can change blood flow from the brain to the body.
A doctor trained by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (N.U.C.C.A.) is able to closely examine the anatomy of the upper neck with both physical examination procedures and specific x-ray protocols. By identifying these specific misalignments the NUCCA trained doctor may be able to find the missing link and underlying cause of the retinal migraine.

If you’re asking the question why am I so tired? Or you been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome or Fibromyalgia. It is important to 1st understand what is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
The Mayo Clinic describes it this way...
"Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complicated disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that may worsen with physical or mental activity, but doesn't improve with rest. Although there are many theories about what causes this condition — ranging from viral infections to psychological stress — in most cases the cause is still unknown. Because its symptoms are difficult to measure, CFS wasn't widely accepted as a real medical condition for several years. Today, however, doctors and researchers agree that this chronic condition should be taken seriously."
So if most people get tired they rest and they get more energy. But if you have chronic fatigue than your batteries don't recharge the same as other people. You can lay down for a nap or sleep 8 hours at night and still wake up as tired as before!
Frequently what we find with patients is Chronic Fatigue will be associated with an undetected brain stem injury. The Brain Stem is very important for regulating our energy level. If the brain stem is not functioning the way it was designed you will have a hard time recovering.
When someone has accidents and injuries that have torn loose the connective tissue that holds the spine in place it will allow the spine to breakdown and lock into a stressed position. The area of the spine that is most frequently affected is the upper neck area because it is the most movable and the most vulnerable to injury. Once this upper neck area is misaligned it will begin to affect the function of the brain stem. This brain stem pressure can lead to a variety of problems including dysfunction with the release of cortisol. Altered cortisol levels can have many different affects on both the mind and the body.
The Mayo Clinic states that "the long-term activation of the stress-response system — and the subsequent overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones can disrupt almost all your body's processes. This puts you at increased risk of numerous health problems, including:
These are some of the most common symptoms associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.
One of the top upper cervical chiropractors in the world Dr. Marshall Dickholtz Sr. along with a medical doctor and a psychiatrist did some very interesting research several years ago looking at the connection between the upper cervical spine and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Here's what they found when they compared quality of life measurements using a survey called the SF-36 six months after the initial correction to normal subjects:
In addition, both the quality and quantity of sleep improved based on all testing and there was significant decrease in sleep medication usage. And maybe most remarkable all subjects in the study found a normalization of cortisol levels in the morning and evening readings at 6 months into care! Amazing improvement! Not only were they feeling better but their bodies were actually working better.

Do you suffer from migraines? Migraine headaches can cause excruciating pain and other symptoms over an extended period of time. Migraine relief can be tough to come by as most medical treatments merely mitigate the symptoms and don't even do that very well. On the other hand, upper cervical chiropractic offers the prospect of instant migraine relief. Does that sound too good to be true? Read on to learn how upper cervical chiropractic care can stop a migraine headache in its tracks.
First, it's important to note that migraines seem to be caused in various ways, which may be why the medical field has had such trouble pinning down a specific cause. But one of the most common triggers for the onset of migraines is an injury to the neck or head. Whether the injury is caused by a sports accident, a car wreck, or even just poor posture, how can upper cervical chiropractic care help?
When an injury occurs to the C1 or C2 vertebrae causing one or both to become misaligned, it affects the entire central nervous system. This is because these two vertebrae that are at the top of the spine are positioned right at the brain stem. Thus, an injury to this area can cause all sorts of miscommunications within the body. Neurological conditions, such as migraine headaches, have been linked to such injuries.
Therefore, an adjustment that aligns these vertebrae properly can result in instant migraine relief. In fact, maintaining the alignment of these vertebrae can potentially keep migraines from recurring.

Chiropractic care has been around for over 100 years, yet many people still are confused about what chiropractic is, why to see a chiropractor and how chiropractic helps people.
Today were going to look at 5 of the most common misconceptions people have about chiropractic.
When most people think about chiropractic, they think of someone that is having back pain. But chiropractors have successfully helped people with all sorts of conditions , including sciatica, headaches, digestive problems, arm and leg numbness and tingling, and more. There are also many people who just see a chiropractor to prevent problems and stay healthy.
Many professional athletes, including Tiger Woods, regularly see a chiropractor to keep their body balanced, strong and performing optimally.
Another common misconception is that chiropractors do not have a good educational background. This just isn’t true. After completing undergraduate work, chiropractors go on to receive a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Between undergraduate and doctoral work, a chiropractor graduating from chiropractic school will have had over 8 years of education beyond high school.
Doctors of chiropractic — who are licensed to practice in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and in many nations around the world — undergo a rigorous education in the healing sciences, similar to that of medical doctors. In some areas, such as anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation, nutrition and public health, they receive more intensive education than their MD counterparts.
In total, the curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. The course of study is approved by an accrediting agency which is fully recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This has been the case for more than 25 years.
I’ve heard this one many times over the years. But the truth is there is nothing about seeing a chiropractor that will force you to keep seeing one. People continue to see chiropractors for their health because they want to, not because they have to.
When you choose to see a chiropractor it is generally because you’re having some sort of a health problem. Those that continue to see chiropractors usually have seen significant results. The problem that they came to the office for has improved or is gone or they have seen all the other benefits associated with chiropractic, such as better sleep, more energy, stronger immune system etc.
When you compare chiropractic to variety of other things that we spend money on such as braces for teeth, plastic surgery, LASIK eye surgery, etc. the cost of having a healthy, strong, and mobile spine is a great value.
Chiropractic care has been consistently shown to be cost effective. For example, The Manga Report, a 1993 Canadian government study was quoted as saying:
“There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of low-back pain was transferred from physicians to chiropractors… Users of chiropractic care have substantially lower health care costs, especially inpatient costs, than those who use medical care only.”
Many people have a common misconception that all chiropractic approaches are the same. The upper cervical chiropractic approach that we utilize requires no crunching or cracking or twisting of the spine. Our gentle approach is not painful, but still extremely effective.
So if you are thinking about seeing a chiropractor, do your own research with an open mind. There is a reason why millions of people see chiropractors every year. I hope you will choose to experience what chiropractic can do for you and your family.

A new study in the Journal, Headache indicates a good night's sleep may be extra-important for people who suffer from migraines, according to a Huffington post report.
Researchers from the University of Mississippi found an association between bad quality sleep and frequency of headaches, as well as increased disability from headaches, among people who get migraines.
Researchers compared students who got migraines with those who didn't and their sleep habits. And among those who got migraines, they took note of the frequency and severity of headaches, as well as their levels of disability during a headache.
Ultimately, 26.7 percent of the nearly 300 students had migraines. However, more people with migraines had worse sleep quality than those who don't get migraines -- 85.9 percent versus 62 percent.
Plus, among those who did get migraines, bad sleep quality was linked with frequency and disability of the headaches.
"Consistent with prior studies on chronic migraine, poor sleep quality is uniquely associated with episodic migraines," the researchers wrote in the study.
Previously, a study that also appeared in the journal Headache suggested that good sleep habits could help decrease the number and intensity of headaches among migraineurs, WebMD reported.
The best solution for a migraine is to get the cause of the problem. For many people migraines began after a head or neck trauma, such as a car crash, fall or other accident. Traumas like these can cause misalignments in the upper neck. Misalignments in the upper neck and been shown to lead to changes in blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow from the brain to the body and the body to the brain. These changes in fluid exchange in the brain have been linked to many conditions, including migraine headaches , and sleep problems.
The best way to correct a misalignment in the upper neck is by utilizing the NUCCA system. NUCCA doctors perform a postural examination in order to determine body imbalance and then take precise 3 dimensional upper neck x-rays in order to mathematically calculate how the misalignment needs to be corrected. After the initial correction, follow-up 3 dimensional x-rays are taken in order to ensure that the misalignment is being corrected properly.
Few clinics have been trained to provide this specialized procedure. Fortunately, one of the clinics is within your own community. The state-of-the-art care provided at our Clinic have given many children and adults their lives back, including many with migraine headaches. And the NUCCA procedure is safe, gentle and extremely effective.

If you have back and leg pain, also known as sciatica, you know how debilitating it can be. Back pain is extremely common with 80% of people experiencing back pain at some point in their lives.
In fact, back pain is now the single leading cause of disability worldwide.
So if you have back pain or sciatica or both, what can you do about it?
Well, here are 5 simple steps to help you conquer that nagging back injury.
Nutrition can play a major role in chronic conditions like lower back pain. Minimizing your intake of processed foods containing trans fats, sugar, gluten, etc. can make a big difference in the amount of inflammation your body is producing.
Dietary changes don’t have to happen overnight. The important thing is to start. Pick one thing on the list and commit to doing that one for now. Cutting out processed foods is a good place to start.
Make sure you’re getting plenty of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to chronic lower back pain, so make sure that your getting your 20 minutes of sun on your face and arms every day and also it may be necessary for you to take a vitamin D supplement.
In my experience, regularly sleeping on your stomach can create severe damage in your neck and back. If you are a stomach sleeper make sure you make the change to your side or back as quickly as possible.
If you are a stomach sleeper, tonight, make the decision to begin to sleep on your side. It is very difficult to move from your stomach (the worst) to sleeping on your back (the best). Remember, if your back hurts in this side sleeping position, you can place a pillow between your knees to alleviate pressure on the lower back.
The best exercise is the one that you will do consistently. Whether it is swimming, fast walking, Pilates, yoga or another exercise program, the key is consistency. Exercise has been shown to improve lower back pain.
When the spine is not properly aligned due to accidents and injuries, lower back pain can frequently develop. Scientific research tells us that Chiropractic adjustments are effective for helping people with lower back problems.
Chiropractic care has also been shown to be more cost-effective than the medical approach of drugs or surgery.
In addition, chiropractic patients report a greater level of satisfaction with chiropractic care, compared to the medical approach.
Along with chiropractic care some healthcare facilities offer physical rehabilitation exercise programs to supplement their chiropractic adjustments.
This type of physical rehabilitation is helpful in improving functional movement, such as sitting, standing, walking, lifting, etc.
Frequently these types of programs will focus on improving muscular strength, flexibility, balance, range of motion and overall mobility.
Now is the time for you to take a massive amount of action!
Without you taking control of your health and the decisions you make when it comes to your body, you will likely continue to suffer with chronic conditions like lower back pain.
A sedentary lifestyle of sitting around all day has been linked to lower back pain.

In the June 2011 edition of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. Dr. Nimira Alibhoy DC presents the case of a 45-year-old female with a history of two major head traumas and 10 car accidents leading to complaints of an 11 year history of fibromyalgia. The history from the study is quite remarkable:
The patient was a 45-year-old female with Fibromyalgia. Symptoms included migraine headaches, chronic pain in the neck, upper and lower back, numbness in fingers, sciatica, right knee pain, depression, and duodenal ulcer.
She sustained a traumatic injury from diving head first into a shallow pool at the age of 15. The patient was then in 10 car accidents over 25 years.
She was later diagnosed with fibromyalgia by her medical doctor. Five years after the diagnosis, she had another traumatic head injury, when she fell head first down a flight of stairs. This increased her sciatica, neck, and back pain.
The patient had been to five general chiropractors over 12 years, who provided temporary relief of her Fibromyalgia symptoms. She was in chronic pain and suffered from depression. She was given Vicodin, Flexeril, or Soma at different times for her pain and soft tissue injuries. Her activity levels were limited in that she could not use stairs, swim, or walk further than 20 feet. She used a wheelchair as it helped her complete her daily routine and limit her tiredness.
A history of head or neck trauma should always be investigated by an Upper Cervical Chiropractor trained in the detection and correction of the Atlas Subluxation Complex (A misalignment of the top bone in the neck). This misalignment causes brain stem dysfunction which can lead to all sorts of changes in the way that all the body systems work. Specifically important in patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia is the brain stem connection to the immune system, circulatory system, respiratory system and digestive system. Along with the connection of the brain stem with the postural muscles up and down the spinal column.
Here is the results for the patient in the study who was able to get the proper upper cervical chiropractic care needed to correct the underlying Brain Stem Subluxation.
Within six months of the first upper cervical correction, the patient revealed that she no longer needed wheelchair assistance. At the first re-evaluation, she reported that her fibromyalgia and left leg sciatica had resolved. She was able to move and perform basic daily functions and sleep in any position. She was feeling more relaxed and had more energy throughout the day. She stated that the sciatica in her right leg improved by 60% and was no longer on any medications.
At second re-evaluation, she stated that her chronic back pain and headaches had resolved. She only continued to have minor right sciatica. By the fifth re-evaluation, 6 months into care, her knee tenderness had also resolved. Her sciatica on the right had 98% improvement. She stated she was able to perform house and yard work. She was also able to swim, walk distances, and stand for long periods of time without taking Tylenol or Advil. The only complaint she had at this point was right hip pain.
Have you been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia?
Do you have a history of head or neck traumas? Car Accidents? Falls? Other Head Injuries?

One of NBA Basketball's most exciting players Dwyane Wade has been an integral part of the Miami Heat's success this season. It has been reported in the media throughout Wade's career that he struggles with recurring migraines.
Wade says about his migraine headaches "Most of the time it lasts for four days," I do everything with the doctors, but there are certain things you can't control."
Or can you?
Is it possible that there is an underlying cause associated with your migraines Dwyane?
If you got to the underlying cause would it be possible to prevent these migraines?
Would it be possible to eliminate them completely?
Dwyane Wade is a very physical player. He frequently dives on the floor and has had several head and neck traumas over the years. Here is one example of Wade whacking his head on the ground in the playoffs a few years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3ksc5_bpYw
Well these accidents and injuries can tear loose the connective tissue that holds the spine in place and create a weakness, which then allows the spine to breakdown and lock into a stressed position.
Now I am sure that the Miami Heat have a staff Chiropractor, as almost all professional sports teams do. But to get to this problem he may need a more advanced approach than general chiropractic. He may require NUCCA.
If Mr. Wade has a misalignment in the upper neck at the base of the brain, blood flow has been shown to be affected. Research is demonstrating that these misalignments in the upper neck at the level of the Atlas can be an underlying factor in several vascular conditions such as Migraine Headaches, High Blood Pressure, Multiple Sclerosis and others. The veins that drain the brain are not working the way that they are supposed to be.
The main way that this takes place is the physical trauma associated with head and neck injuries.
The only way to safely, precisely and gently realign the spine is by acquiring precise upper cervical x-rays. Once the upper neck is viewed from all three directions then a plan can be put together to correct this complex condition. The NUCCA procedure is very effective at restoring the upper neck to it's proper alignment and relieving the pressure from the blood vessels.
