I’m sure that anyone reading this article has probably heard about fibromyalgia; you may be noticing the symptoms yourself, or at the very least have a friend or family member who has. Unfortunately, a lot of sufferer's are initially treated as if they're symptoms were imaginary, but over the years the medical community has started to take the condition seriously. Even so, the actual causes of the condition aren't always clear due in part to the fact the actual causes are influenced by several factors which can make treatment difficult but fortunately, not impossible.
As high as 90% of fibromyalgia sufferers are also stricken with chronic fatigue syndrome, which can cause pain, exhaustion, headaches, a tingling sensation and numbness, sleep problems, dizziness, stiffness, cognitive impairment, stress, noise sensitivity, a swollen sensation in tissues and more.
Treating fibromyalgia symptoms and attempting to identify the cause can be complicated and drugs, besides infrequently being effective when it comes to controlling symptoms, also comes with its own hard to deal with side effects. This has led a lot of fibromyalgia sufferer’s to take a hard look at natural treatment options, considered by the medical industry as alternative or complementary medicine. But how do you separate fact from fiction when it comes to alternative care? You consider the available research reported by reputable facilities. Reputable treatments include the following.
Acupuncture treatments for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are becoming much more common as a complementary therapy or participated in alone. In 1997, the National Institute of Health officially acknowledged acupuncture as an important part of mainstream medicine, stating the procedure is a safe and effective treatment for a wide array of conditions, including fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. According to a growing number of medical professionals, both Western and Eastern, have agreed that the benefits of acupuncture include better sleep, less pain, an enhanced immune system and overall improved health.
Because fibromyalgia causes pain and makes your body extremely sensitive to touch and pressure, you probably won't be able to tolerate any kind of deep tissue massage so you'll want to make sure that your massage therapist is familiar with the gentle touch required for treating fibromyalgia, or that they are willing to do some research on it. Studies have shown that gentle massage can help lower anxiety and improve sleep patterns in individuals suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Another massage technique that can be very effective is called Myofascial Release which treats a condition called myofascial pain syndrome, in which trigger points and fascial restrictions cause widespread, intense pain, an extremely common problem for people with fibromyalgia. As a matter of fact, myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia are believed to be the same condition by certain sectors of the healthcare community.
While the precise cause of fibromyalgia syndrome is unknown to the medical community, the latest research has determined that traumatic head and neck injuries like concussions or whiplash are risk factors for both fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue occurrences. For example, after spinal injury, in many cases fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue symptoms can occur either immediately or months, even years afterward. The objective of upper cervical chiropractic care is to reverse the trauma triggered injury and in so doing minimizing discomfort to the nerves located in the brain stem and spinal cord that can cause pain, fatigue and neuromuscular dysfunction.
If the underlying cause of the fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue symptoms is an upper neck injury an upper cervical specialist is well-equipped to identify the problem and correct it safely, gently and effectively. And unlike general chiropractic manipulation upper cervical specific techniques required no popping, cracking or twisting of the spine which at times can make fibromyalgia symptoms worse.

Besides just excruciating pain, migraines can be associated with various other symptoms. One common migraine symptom is nausea. The nausea may even become so great that vomiting results. What are the causes of migraines and why is nausea a symptom? An even more important question is: what can you do about your migraines?
The causes of migraines are not completely understood but researchers believe that some migraines may be hereditary while others may be the result of injury. Some have come to find that taking part in certain activities or eating particular foods such as chocolate or red wine is what brings on a migraine. The pain of the migraine may be the cause of the nausea, or it could be related to the chemicals in the brain that are released during a migraine.
What are the common treatments? Many doctors will prescribe an antidepressant, beta blocker, or even an anti-seizure medication to help mitigate symptoms or reduce the occurrence of migraines. Each of these types of medications have side effects. But what can you do if you prefer a natural remedy?
Keeping a journal to discover what triggers your migraines is one good way to try and prevent them from occuring, but to really treat the problem, you have to get to the source. An upper cervical chiropractic visit may help you to discover if an upper neck injury could be the cause of your migraines. If so, a specialized upper cervical chiropractic procedure could reduce the number of migraines you experience, or eliminate them completely.

The Mayo Clinic states that "the long-term activation of the stress-response system — and the subsequent overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones — can disrupt almost all your body's processes”.
This puts you at increased risk of numerous health problems, including:
Cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress. Too much cortisol or an overexposure for a long period of time will lead to the chronic stress response.
What Is the Chronic Stress Response?
Our bodies are designed to deal with stress for a short time. This is what’s known as the fight or flight response, which is there to help us fight off a lion or run away from it.
But when an initial stress reaction becomes a chronic stress response, that’s when we run into problems.
According to Wikipedia, “Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure suffered for a prolonged period over which an individual perceives he or she has no control.”
High stress jobs, traffic, poor diet, lack of exercise and an inability to unplug and relax has led to the chronic stress response becoming the norm rather than the exception in our society.
In fact, it’s estimated that up to 90% of doctor’s visits are for conditions in which stress at least plays a role!"
With all the stress that each of us are dealing with on a daily basis. It is important that we have ways for our bodies to adapt to a stressful lifestyle.
Here are 3 of the best:
Massage therapy has been shown to significantly improve hormone balance. The International Journal of Neuroscience, analyzed a large amount of data associated with massage therapy and stress. They found significant decreases in bad stress hormones such as cortisol (average decrease 31%) with people who regularly receive massage therapy.
And good hormones such as serotonin and dopamine, which have been shown to decrease the chronic stress response were found to increase due to massage. The average increase was 28% for serotonin and an average increase of 31% for dopamine.
The study authors concluded, “these studies combined suggest the stress-alleviating effects (decreased cortisol) and the activating effects (increased serotonin and dopamine) of massage therapy on a variety of medical conditions and stressful experiences.”
NUCCA spinal care can do a lot more than just help with symptoms. Upper cervical chiropractic care improves the function of the nervous system, joint range of motion, mobility, flexibility, posture and more.
Upper cervical Chiropractic care has also been shown to positively influence stress hormones. Dramatic decreases of cortisol levels and improved immune system function has been noted in research.
This improvements in stress hormones allows your body to better adapt to your daily stresses.
When was the last time you exercised?
Exercise has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Many people report they just feel better if they are regularly exercising. That’s because exercise reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, such as serotonin and dopamine. These good hormones are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators.
So now is the time to apply these stress reducing behaviors and watch the effects in your own life.

Temporomandibular joint disorder involves a collection of symptoms, including pain and tenderness of the muscles that we use to chew and the jaw joint known as the TMJ (temporomandibular joint), as well as of several sites along the head and neck.
The pain is usually worse in the morning, and the person commonly has a history of stress and difficulty in sleeping. Jaw movement may be accompanied by grinding, clicking, catching, and popping, resulting in restricted or deviated motion during opening or closing of the mouth.
Traditionally, dentists and orthodontists seek to change the person's bite in order to deal with TMD. Medical doctors use surgery and drugs in their approach to TMD.
But, new research from The Upper Cervical Research Foundation is showing dramatic improvement in patients with jaw pain following a natural approach. In the study, patients with Jaw pain or TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) were referred forNUCCA evaluation and care. Over an 8 week period all patients had a dramatic improvement in their TMJ symptoms.
Their jaw pain before treatment averaged of 5.9/10 on the pain scale. Following 8 weeks of NUCCA care the average dropped down to 0.9/10 an 85% improvement! Several other research studies have been conducted over the years showing the connection between the upper neck and the jaw.
The NUCCA approach involves rebalancing the position of the head, the neck and as a consequence, the jaw. NUCCA spinal care is safe, gentle, precise and extremely effective.
If you suffer from TMJ and are searching for natural relief, upper cervical chiropractic is a good place to look. An upper cervical chiropractor can do more than just help your posture. These two uppermost neck bones being aligned properly can relieve TMJ symptoms, headaches, and many other related conditions. Why not have an upper cervical specialist check out your neck to see if you could benefit from this specific and gentle type of chiropractic care.

Many people hear about NUCCA Care and are wondering if they can be helped by this extraordinary type of care. The first step is a consultation where your history, especially any history of head or neck trauma will be discussed. Next, an examination will be performed. If after an examination it is determined that the patient is demonstrating significant body imbalances such as head tilting to one side, one shoulder being lower than the other, one hip being lower than the other, rotation in the pelvis etc.
Then the NUCCA Doctor will take extremely precise x-rays of the head and neck to determine the severity and type of the spinal misalignment. The Doctor will then analyze the x-rays and determine a specific upper cervical correction formula that will work to bring your spine back into alignment. After the first upper cervical correction the Doctor will take two post x-rays to determine the response of the body to the initial correction. After the initial evaluation the doctor will be able to estimate the number of corrections needed and the length of time necessary for the spine to be stabilized.
To see if you possibly would be a good candidate for NUCCA Spinal Care you can start by asking yourself a few questions and doing a few simple tests:
Frequently body imbalance precedes pain and sickness…so even if your accident, fall, sports injury, or other trauma occurred years prior it may be related to your current health condition.
These are signs of body imbalance and you should be further evaluated for head/neck misalignment!
NUCCA Spinal Care is the missing ingredient for so many people. Our bodies are designed to be balanced beginning with our head and neck. Without a properly balanced body all the exercise, nutrition, stress management will be lacking an extremely important ingredient…a properly functioning nervous system. The nervous system controls every cell in our body. The brain, brain stem, spinal cord, and nerves that go throughout our bodies work like an intricate network communicating health and healing messages to the body.
If the spinal column is not properly aligned then those messages from the brain will be interfered with. If the message is going to your heart…the heart will not function as well, if the nerve message controls the stomach and it is interfered with the stomach will not work the way it is designed. Nerve interference is a very serious and detrimental consequence of body imbalance. Evaluate your own head/neck alignment or get checked by a NUCCA Doctor as soon as possible.
Don’t wait another day! It could make all the difference for you and your future!

Maybe you know someone with arthritis in their hands or even their knees. But arthritis in their spine – now that might be a new one on you!
Arthritis of the spine is known by several names, including osteoarthritis, degenerative joint or disc disease and subluxation degeneration. It is actually quite common - but do you know what it is or what causes it?
This is how it starts – after all – we’re talking about degeneration, which by the very nature of its definition means a process of deteriorating over time. In fact, the first phase of subluxation degeneration can take 20 years to develop!
One of your spinal joints experiences some sort of trauma, such as auto accidents or whiplash injuries. As a result of this entry, your body tries to stabilize the joint by splinting together the bones that make up the joint. It does this by moving calcium into the area of the inflamed joint; the calcium is what actually causes the splint to develop. As the calcium deposits built up, abnormal bone growth results. Subluxation degeneration eventually takes its toll on your body’s health, leading to other conditions.
Maintaining proper joint alignment and movement is essential to prevent subluxation degeneration. It is best to have an upper cervical chiropractic examination as soon as possible after any type of spinal trauma to reduce your risk of doing damage to your spine.
Keep in mind that trauma to the spine may occur during the birth process or during any of the “tumble and fall” years of early childhood and adolescence – right on up through the early adult years. In fact, it can take 40 – 60 years for full spinal degeneration to set in – that’s a long time to go without care for a vertebral subluxation that may have occurred when you fell off the bed at the age of two!
Remember that upper cervical chiropractors are uniquely qualified to detect any type of degenerative change in the spine. The earlier it is detected, the better chance you have for total correction, protection against further damage and a real opportunity to experience what true health is all about!
Upper Cervical Chiropractic can help to improve joint alignment and function and remember, we can also advise you on the best exercise to do to help relieve pain and keep the condition from progressing.

If you've ever experienced a migraine, you know how painful, almost crippling they can be and when the symptoms strike you want relief. While we want fast relief, it's equally important to find something that works for the long haul and if possible, permanently. While there are a number of over the counter and prescription drugs that treat migraines, there are also a quite a few natural options that have little or no risky side effects including the following:
A dose of these amazingly healthy fats can fight the inflammation that is quite often the cause of many headaches including some migraines. Good sources of omega 3's include flax seeds or oil, fresh salmon or fish oil supplements. A good omega-3 fatty acid company is Nordic naturals. You can find more information at www.nordicnaturals.com.
Another approach to alleviating migraine symptoms is hydrotherapy and you can do it at home. Basically, you take a shower with the water temperature as hot as you can stand it for a couple of minutes, followed by 2 or 3 minutes of cold water, alternating between the two for around 20 minutes. This technique improves circulation as well as increases blood flow. Another hydrotherapy technique would be to put your feet in icy cold water and place a hot compress on the back of your neck. This treatment method causes the blood to flow down towards your feet, which relieves the pressure in your head.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic is a very precise and gentle form of Chiropractic that specifically deals with the vertebral subluxation (when one or more of the bones in your spine are out of alignment) at the top of the spine. Eliminating the vertebral subluxation near the brain stem helps ensure an accurate flow of communication between your nervous system and the rest of the body, allowing for a full range of efficient brain stem function and healing properties to effectively synchronize your vital organ systems. Even more important, it can reduce migraine headaches to almost nothing, or even eliminate them all together, over time.
One of the most important things you can do for overall good health is to consistently maintain a healthy lifestyle and this applies to migraines as well. Regular sleep, balanced with regular meals has been proven to prevent migraines for many people. You should try to go to bed at the same time every night and get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep. Low blood sugar can trigger migraine headaches and by maintaining a healthy, consistent lifestyle plan that includes a good night's sleep and regular, balanced meals can prevent a low blood sugar episode. Making time for regular exercise can help fight a migraine episode as well.
Learn how to manage excess stress, anxiety and depression by meditating, taking a walk, yoga, basically anything that helps you unwind. You may want to see a counselor that deals with these specific problems; they can teach you strategies to relieve emotional issues with stress being at the top of the list because it can trigger migraines.
Implementing these 5 all-natural strategies may help to prevent or relieve migraine headaches, permanently. To find an upper cervical chiropractor in your area go to www.upcspine.com or if you are in the Sacramento, California area schedule a consultation by clicking the button below:

Two million people are exposed to whiplash injury (related to an auto accident) in the U.S. every year.
When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth or side-to-side beyond its normal limits, ligaments supporting the neck vertebrae can be sprained (over-stretched) or torn, forcing vertebrae out of their normal position.
In tests of low speed rear impact collisions, it was reported that the neck can be injured even in slow speeds accidents as low as 5 mph.
Most rear impact accidents occur at crash speeds of 6 to 12 mph - speeds below the threshold for property damage to the vehicle - but sufficient to cause neck injury.
Whiplash injuries to the cervical spine can occur in sports (skiing, hockey, football, cycling, ice skating, gymnastics, boxing), during falls (down a flight of stairs, on an icy sidewalk), and many more!
German researchers Dr. Kaeser and Dr. Ettlin have found that a whiplash injury can lead to a variety of problems including dizziness, speech problems, throat problems and hearing loss
In the conclusion of the research article, these German medical doctors say that whiplash symptoms often respond to upper neck adjustments.
If a person (infant, child, or adult) experiences an accident, a proper spinal exam is necessary to assess whether a neck injury occurred. An NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic specialist uses specialized testing and specific x-rays of the upper neck to accurately assess a neck injury. If a neck injury is found, a specific adjustment by hand is used to correct the injured vertebrae. Correction of the neck injury can improve, reverse, and prevent numerous whiplash symptoms.

One of the symptoms that is less commonly seen in migraine sufferers is aura. This set of symptoms generally occurs before the onset of the migraine. It includes things like temporary vision impairment, flashes of light, and tingling feelings in the hands or face. It may also be accompanied by physical weakness. What causes this type of migraine?
The causes of migraines in general are still disputed, and why some people experience aura while others do not is also unknown. However, researchers are fairly certain that it has something to do with chemicals in the brain being suddenly released. The two in particular that seem to be connected to aura are dopamine and serotonin.
The good news is that treatment for migraines with aura is basically the same as treatment for a standard migraine. Since aura is also often experienced before a seizure, some physicians have prescribed anti-seizure medications for migraines. Also, antidepressants have been used as a treatment since these work to control the levels of the same chemicals that seem to be related to migraines. The problem with all medications prescribed for migraines is that they all have side effects and can lead to rebound headaches and a worsening of symptoms over time.
For those who are looking for drug free treatment of their migraines, many have turned to upper cervical chiropractic. This is a natural way to relieve symptoms, reduce the frequency of migraines or eliminate migraine headaches completely. Since many migraines are a result of a misalignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. Since these vertebrae can affect the brain stem and spinal cord, a misalignment can have far reaching effects on the body including migraine headaches.
